A TOWER IN A DAY

NORTHWEST CONTAINER SERVICES HELPS TO REOPEN BOEING FIELD AFTER SEATTLE’S EARTHQUAKE

Seattle, Washington - Soon after "The Rattle in Seattle" closed the Air Traffic Control Tower at Boeing Field on February 28, 2001, the FAA contacted Northwest Container to help get the field back in operation.

The Richter 6.8 quake, which also left the 10,000-foot west runway cracked and unusable, damaged the existing control tower only slightly, but seismic analysis indicated the plan to remodel the 1968-era building would have to be moved up to include structural upgrades to prevent the building from collapsing in a stronger earthquake, should one occur.

The fastest way to get the tower back in shape would be to raise a mobile control station, built into a road trailer, to a height of about 25 feet adjacent to the existing tower. To accommodate the very tight installation schedule, a boom truck was placed on site on Monday, March 5. Edgmon & Son Trucking delivered six standard 40’ containers starting Monday morning. These were stacked 2 wide X 3 high on a leveled gravel platform in a parking area on the west side of the field. Stacking cones helped to tie the stack together. As darkness fell, the crane placed two 40’ Platform containers on the top of the stack to provide a level surface for the control trailer. The crane gently hoisted the trailer into place, 27 feet above the parking lot, at about 10:00 that night, and the tower resumed operation on Tuesday morning.
